A Look into the History of Dentistry – Insights from Your Bloomfield NJ Dental Clinic

Collection of ancient dental tools

As a general Dentist in Bloomfield NJ and a graduate of NYU College of Dentistry, I am excited to share some insights on the history of dentistry. Over time, dentistry has evolved from basic tooth extractions to complex procedures such as dental implants and cosmetic dentistry. In this blog post, we will take a closer look at the evolution of dentistry over time.

Early Days

Dentistry dates back to ancient times when primitive societies would use sharpened stones or shells to remove damaged teeth. The ancient Egyptians were known for their advanced dental practices that included fillings made out of gold wire and animal teeth. It wasn’t until much later that modern-day advancements were made.

In the 1700s, French surgeon Pierre Fauchard published “The Surgeon Dentist,” which is considered one of the first comprehensive books on modern dentistry. This book introduced various techniques for filling cavities and tooth extraction.

Advancements in Modern Times

In the 19th century, advancements in technology allowed for safer procedures such as anesthesia during dental surgery. Additionally, new materials were developed such as amalgam fillings that offered improved durability than previous methods.

The introduction of X-rays in 1895 revolutionized oral healthcare by allowing doctors to see inside teeth and detect issues before they became major problems.

Today’s dental practices have come a long way with digital X-rays that offer reduced radiation exposure compared to traditional film X-rays. Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology allows for precise design and creation of dental restorations such as crowns.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is one area where recent significant innovations have improved smiles using various procedures. Teeth whitening is a common cosmetic procedure that uses powerful bleaching agents to remove stains and discoloration on teeth.

Dental bonding is another cosmetic procedure that involves using a tooth-colored resin to reshape an/ord repair damaged or chipped teeth. Veneers are thin shells that cover the front of the teeth to give them a more symmetrical appearance.
